(Minooka) - Lillian Petersen, a senior and member of the National Honor Society (NHS) at Minooka Community High School, has been named one of 500 national semifinalists in the National Honor Society Scholarship Program. Lillian was chosen from more than 11,000 applicants and will receive a $2,850 scholarship.

High school seniors who are members in good standing of an active National Honor Society chapter are able to apply for an NHS Scholarship. Finalists are selected on the basis of their leadership skills; participation in service organizations, clubs, and other student groups at school and in the community; and their academic record. As a semifinalist, Lillian is recognized as one of the top 500 NHS members in the nation this school year.

While at Minooka Community High School, Petersen has been President of Interact, President of International Club, Secretary for World Wide Youth in Science and Engineering and is also a member of Spanish National Honor Society. This fall she plans to attend Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts to study bioengineering.

“Lillian Peterson is the first semi-finalist for a national award in our chapter's history,” said MCHS Science Department Chairperson and NHS sponsor Donna Engel. “She is a passionate leader modeling the pillars of the National Honor Society with all of her actions. She thinks outside the box. She recognizes the needs of her community and sets herself on a path to make a difference. She is passionately committed to making the world a better place for all individuals.”
