For the last several years, Minooka Community High School District 111 has experienced an accelerated rate of growth in its student population due to a boom in local residential development. While efforts to manage growth while maintaining a focus on offering a quality education for all students remained the focus of District 111 officials, it quickly became clear that the only feasible way to manage this growth was through the construction of a second high school.
On March 21, 2006, voter approved the sale of construction bonds to be used to construct the first phase of this school on a site (already owned by District 111) located on the south side of U.S. Route 6 in Channahon, between Hunter’s Crossing subdivision and the new Com-Ed station.
Construction of the school is scheduled to begin in September 2006. The school is scheduled to open for the onset of the 2008-09 school year. At the time of its opening, the new school will house all District 111 freshmen and sophomores, while the current school building will house all District 111 juniors and seniors. Minooka Community High School will technically operate as a “split campus” until 2014 (estimated), at which time enrollment projections state that District 111 enrollment will reach 3,000. This will necessitate the start of phase two of this project, which includes completion of the new school (addition of various specialized classrooms, athletic fields, etc.), as well as renovations to the current high school. Once this phase is completed, each school will each house 2,000 students, for a total of 4,000 District 111 students.
