MCHS Student Wins Scholarship at FFA Contest

(Minooka) – The MCHS FFA participated in the Section 7 Agronomy Contest at Woodland High School in Streator last November.  While the team performed well as a group, senior Doris Karales performed exceptionally well and earned a $500 scholarship from the LaSalle County Soil and Water Conservation District.

“We did awesome as a team,” said Karales.  “I was so impressed by how my teammates did that I thought one of them had won the scholarship - not me.”

The competition, which hosted over 50 participants, challenged students to take written identification tests in five areas, including: insects, weeds, grasses, and area vegetation.  With each identification area, students had to examine a sample and identify what it was and rate the samples based on how profitable they would be if they were sold in the market.

“The competition was a challenge because we only had a set amount of time for each part of the contest and we couldn’t touch the samples with our fingers,” she added.  “So you had everyone crowded around the samples, trying to do their best.  It was tough.”

Next year, Karales plans to attend Joliet Junior College and then transfer to either the University of Illinois or Southern Illinois University to major in agricultural education and minor in history or equine (horse) science.
